Over 20 million South Africans call rural areas home

This is roughly one-third of the population. Most of these communities are plagued by underdevelopment and poverty. Jobs are scarce and, for those who stay, the opportunities are slim.

But if we can refocus our attention towards rural areas, bringing knowledge, capacity and investment - we can transform the nation.

In South Africa, 8 out of every 10 rural households live in poverty. Our goal is to reduce poverty in all its forms by two-thirds within 20 years, eliminate food insecurity, and ensure access to adequate water and sanitation.

South Africa’s unemployment crisis is most severe in rural areas. Roughly 300,000 rural people move to the cities each year in search of work. To create rural jobs we need to increase agriculture output, support rural enterprise, and deliver practical training solutions.

Rural people have traditionally depended on government for development, often with poor results. InvestRural aims to shift this mindset, building strong, resilient communities that can sustain development, address local and municipal issues, and respond to new opportunities and challenges.
